When the Reds Ruled the Roost

The story of a 50-year hockey love affair between a team and its thousands of passionate fans. It will make you laugh, cry and perhaps gasp when you see the rare and lost hockey film in this extraordinary video. It includes film from every decade starting in the 1920s when the Rhode Island Reds were born.

This 40-minute program, as seen on WJAR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Providence, Rhode Island includes rare film and photos of Hockey Hall of Famers Milt Schmidt, Johnny Bower, Ed Giacomin and Fern Flaman. Additional former hockey greats included in the program are some of the toughest guys ever to play the game like Jim Bartlett, Eddie Shack and Chuck Scherza. The program is narrated by Boston Bruins legendary announcer Fred Cusick and produced by Emmy award-winning and former television sportscaster Joe Rocco, President of RocJo Productions.

The special-edition DVD includes 30 minutes of fantastic bonus video in these three chapters that will NOT be shown on television:

  • "Tough Guys": Wild fight stories from some of the toughest guys ever to play professional hockey including Jim Bartlet and Chuck Scherza.
  • "1956 Calder Cup Memories": Hall of Fame goaltender Johnny Bower is among several former Reds players and employees who share their wonderful memories of the team's final championship victory.
  • "Reds vs. Cleveland Barons in 1961 Showdown": Extraordinary six minute highlight reel with narration of Reds game in Cleveland. This reel contains outstanding quality film of game action involving great goaltender and 4 time AHL Goaltender of the Year, Gil Mayer, Reds battler Jim Bartlet and many more of yesterday's hockey heroes.

Visit back to 1954, when the Reds became one of the first teams in pro hockey to purchase a new-fangled machine called “The Zamboni” – a vehicle that would quickly resurface the R. I. Auditorium’s ice between periods.

2007/2008 Commemorative Ornament: 
Can/Am League Championships Uniform

The R. I. Reds Heritage Society's 7th annual commemorative ornament captures every tiny detail of the uniform jerseys worn by the R. I. Reds through three championship seasons (1929-30, 31-32 and 33-34) in the old Can/Am League. 

This rare collectible makes a lasting keepsake and perfect addition to your holiday tree. It is the second in a series of championship uniform reproductions and follows last year's replica uniform worn by the Reds in their last Calder Cup championship year of 1955-56. That ornament is still available for purchase, too.

Rhode Island illustrators Chil Mott and Gail Greenwood have created a dramatic 36” x 24” poster to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the R. I. Reds last American Hockey League Calder Cup championship of 1955-56.
