Reds Expect 30 Ex-Pros at its August 6th Reunion

Providence, RI (July 30, 2006): The Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society has finalized a roster of 30 players expected to attend the group’s 6th annual reunion at Goddard State Park in Warwick next Sunday, August 6, at noon. In celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Reds last American Hockey League Calder Cup championship of 1955-56, seven players from that club will be in attendance. They are Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Johnny Bower, defensemen Aldo Guidolin and Bob Robertson, plus forwards Jimmy Bartlett, Bruce Cline, Don Raleigh and Ray Ross. A special poster commemorating the 1955-56 championship will be available for fans to purchase and have autographed by the players. The actual Calder Cup, on loan from the AHL, will be available for photos, too. Other former Reds expected are Hall of Fame defenseman Ferny Flaman, goalies Al Bentley, Ross Brooks and Gil Mayer, defensemen Ian Anderson, Ray Clearwater and Marty Gateman, and forwards Stan Baluik, Serge Boudreault, Bobby Leduc, Yves Locas, Don McKenney, George Ranieri and Chuck Scherza. The four Bennett brothers, Curt, Bill, Harvey, Jr., and Jim --- all of whom grew up in Cranston --- will be on hand as will other ex-pro Rhode Islanders including Don Mellor, his son Tom, Eddie Lee, Tim Army and his brother Bill. Part of the event will be a presentation of the 2006-07 Tops Award, given annually by the society in honor of Zellio Toppazzini, the Reds “Player of the Century.” It will be presented this year to Stan Baluik for his dedicated service to the Reds and the larger community.
