Three Hockey Hall of Fame Members to Attend Reds Reunion

Providence, RI (July 2, 2006): The Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society expects at least three Hockey Hall of Fame members to attend its 6th annual reunion at Goddard State Park in Warwick on Sunday, August 6. Signed on now to participate in the Reds’ event are Ferny Flaman, former star defenseman with the Boston Bruins in the 1940s and ‘50s, and Milt Schmidt, another Bruins’ great who centered the team’s famous “Kraut Line” during the same era. Both live in nearby Westwood, MA. After 18 NHL seasons, Flaman finished his distinguished career as player-coach of the R. I. Reds in the early 1960s. Conversely, Schmidt began his career in Providence back in 1936 when he centered wingers Bobby Bauer and Wood Dumart. The line was eventually promoted to the Bruins where they teamed effectively for many years. At the reunion Flaman and Schmidt will join Hall of Fame goaltender Johnny Bower, who led the locals to the AHL’s Calder Cup title back in 1955-56. Bower will be in town for the society’s 50th anniversary celebration of that last Reds’ cup championship. Other members of the ‘55-56 team committed to attend are Jimmy Bartlett, Bruce Cline, Aldo Guidolin, Don “Bones” Raleigh, Bob Robertson and Ray Ross. The society still is working to land defenseman Ivan Irwin and forward George “Dusty” Blair. With 5 weeks remaining before the event, the Reds’ society reports tickets already are about half sold. The group urges fans to act soon before the July 15 deadline. “The response has been terrific so far,” said Buster Clegg, president. “With at least 25 ex-Reds and other pro players expected to show, this promises to be the best reunion we’ve been able to put together.” The event includes an all-you-can-eat buffet and a raffle of many gift prizes. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-12. Kids under 6 will be admitted free. For more information fans can call 401-247-2666. |
