Society to Honor Brad Boss with Sage Award

Providence, RI (7/12/2018): When the University of Rhode Island opened its new arena, Brad Boss laced up his skates and became the first to glide across the ice surface. The first on-the-ice honor was well-earned and represented his dedication to both the university and to the game of hockey.

URI recognized his leadership at his alma mater (Class of 1955) by naming the new facility The Bradford R. Boss Arena in his honor when it opened in 2002. During this summer's 18th annual reunion weekend, the R.I. Reds Heritage Society will recognize his dedication to the game of hockey by awarding Boss the Sage Family Foundation Service Award for 2018 on Sunday, August 5, at noon in Goddard State Park in Warwick.

Boss is chairman emeritus of the A.T. Cross company, his family's business known worldwide as the maker of fine writing instruments. At URI he had been a talented athlete who starred in golf, tennis and sailing, excelling in the later sport as one of the top 10 skippers in New England.

But it was in the game of hockey where he has had the most dramatic impact. He played hockey at URI and was one of the founders of the club team at the university in 1951. That club program has become a regional powerhouse, and the university also added a women's club program. As the URI president said at the dedication of the arena: "Bradís vision and support for this arena and URI as a whole has been unflagging."

He is a member of the URI Athletic Hall of Fame and the R.I. Heritage Hall of Fame. He also is a member of the nine-person selection committee of the Rhode Island Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Sage Family Foundation Service Award recognizes exceptional service to the game of hockey. It honors the memory of George Sage, former owner of the Reds franchise and the auditorium in which they played.

The annual Sunday event, which starts at noon, will feature introductions of each hockey hero on stage, the Society's annual awards presentations, a delicious buffet dinner, music, raffles, and a silent auction of valuable hockey memorabilia. Cost is $35 per adult, $15 for children.

As an added weekend treat for fans, the reunion's annual dinner dance on Saturday will feature guest speaker Jack Edwards, Boston Bruinsí broadcaster, at the Chelo's banquet facility on Post Road in Warwick. Tickets are $50 per person.

For information and reservations to each event, contact Mal Goldenberg at 401-782-6623 or mal@rmcri.com. Deadline for reservations has been extended to July 24. Tickets will not be sold at the gate.
