R.I. Reds star Bob Robertson dies

Providence, RI (4/9/2012): The R. I. Reds Heritage Society sadly lost one of its own when Bob Robertson, a member of the Reds last AHL Calder Cup championship team, succumbed to lung cancer at a hospice facility near his home in Woodbridge, Ontario, on Good Friday, April 6.

Robertson, 84, played a huge role on defense for the Reds in 1955-56 as the team not only finished first in the league’s regular season but breezed past Buffalo and Cleveland in the playoffs to take the Calder Cup. He played 13 seasons of pro hockey, five of which were in a Reds’ uniform.

A charter member of our Society, “Robbie” took a leadership role as “captain” of the Johnny Bower Bus, organizing transportation from Toronto to Rhode Island for our last five reunions. He personally attended all 11 reunions we have held since our first in 2001.

“We extend our sympathies to his wife Margaret and son Gary and his family,” said Buster Clegg, president of the Society. “He will be sorely missed by our entire Reds Family.”
